10 years on . . . .

As we await the TfW report on ‘options’ for new stations along the South Wales Mainline (as part of the Burns Delivery Programme), lobbying politicians and organisations continues, to try to get Magor and Undy Walkway to be the first built.

As such, we were pleased to welcome the Rt. Hon. David Davies MP (Secretary of State for Wales) to meet us on 10th March at the Golden Lion.  The meeting was kindly arranged by our ever-supporting MP, Jessica Morden, who joined the meeting via Zoom (as she was on her way to her party conference). As well as our usual MAGOR technical experts, Ted Hand and Phil Inskip, Rich Middleton (GWR’s Growth Manager) and representatives from MCC were also in attendance to advise.  David, who appeared to be well-briefed on the project, asked many pertinent questions so that he fully understood the aims and challenges facing the MAGOR group in the context of the Burns delivery program.  The secretary of state appeared to be very supportive of MAGOR’s aims (both as MP for Monmouth and as Sec. of State) and agreed to do what he could do to help and find out more.  You can see David’s reflections on the meeting by clicking here.  Our thanks to all participants.

Meanwhile, also in March, the then High Sheriff of Gwent (Malgwyn Davies OBE CStJ) awarded MAGOR Group a certificate of recognition of 10 years of campaigning for a station for Magor and Undy. As well as presenting the certificate, seen here with Laurence Hando, the Group’s Chair, Malgwyn gave a fascinating and amusing talk on the history and role of the High Sherriff.  We really appreciate the recognition of the 10 years of dedication the group members have given. Incidentally, I believe the presentation of the certificate was one of Malgwyn’s last duties before the end of his term of office. The position of High Sheriff is now held by another of MAGOR’s dedicated supporters, Professor Simon Gibson, Chair of the Burns delivery program. Our best wishes and thanks go to both of them.

Looking forward into May, I will be participating in the Senedd Petitions Committee process review focus group and then later this month Transport for Wales transport liaison stakeholders’ group.

All for now
