In my last post (at the end of 2025) I said that that it was great that funding had been identified for the the rail projects in Wales – including Magor & Undy Walkway – but we hoped for greater clarity in 2026!
Over the last day or so, there have been a range of reports that indicate that ‘Magor Station’ is confirmed and will be the first to be delivered. The Prime Minister himself, visiting Cardiff, outlined the commitment.
Of course we totally welcome this news and thank our supporters, local polititicians, councils (local and county) and particularly MPs Catherine Fookes MP and our former MP Jessica Morden for bringing us this far. The South Wales Argus did a great piece focussing on the achievement of our Group. The BBC news has made a full report, focussing on the Prime Minister’s visit and the ‘£14 billion funding promise’. So, it seems funding has been confirmed but we are still unclear and concerned about timeframes – ‘work starting later this year’, ‘construction in 2029’, etc.. We have always advocated, with a good basis of knowledge, that ‘Magor’ could be started tomorrow and built within 18 months or thereabouts. Therefore our Group will meet shortly, discuss and agree the questions that we need to seek answers to.
Nevertheless, it is no doubt a big step forward and once again we thank everyone for the support and assistance. Watch this space for further updates!
