Network Rail confirms ‘electrification of relief lines is in the plans’

As mentioned previously, a representative from MAGOR now attends Monmouthshire County Council’s Strategic Transport Group.

At its meeting on 24th September, a presentation was given by Network Rail on ‘The Proposals for the Electrification of the Main Line, through Monmouthshire’. It included details on bridge and tunnel clearance, embankment strengthening, level crossing remediation and vegetation clearance.

During the course of the presentation it became clear that the necessary bridge and track work, to ensure sufficient clearance for the overhead line equipment, included the relief lines. Network Rail confirmed that this was the case. Of course project plans can change but this was great news for us as electrification of those relief lines is a prerequisite to ever opening a new station.

Network Rail now continues to work with our local authority and other organisations (e.g. Natural Resources Wales) to develop the plans fully.
